The Advantages of Tanning
Despite all the negative press that has been associated with sun tanning and the use of tanning beds it remains a popular past time activity albeit maybe for the wrong reasons. Still, there are benefits that come from natural tanning, that is, exposure to the sun has a number of health benefits. This is not the say that tanning beds provide the same benefits.
The most obvious advantage to tanning is probably also the wrong reasons that most people tan. That is for the aesthetic effect of appealing to western beliefs that a darker toned skin is healthier and therefore more attractive than fair skin. This is what gets people into trouble with over exposure to UV radiation.
For functional purposes, having tanned skin does have its benefits. The extra melanin that is produced by the skin which results in the coloration of the skin actually helps protect the skin from sun damage. Fair skin burns much more easily than one that has developed some amount of tan.
Natural sunlight is also what causes a chemical reaction at the surface of the skin and allows the body to produce the vital D3 vitamin. This is a key ingredient to maintaining the health of a person's internal organs.
Another benefit of tanning is actually an unintentional side effect. Many people find that tanning is a relaxing experience. This calm soothing experience is sometimes the only reason some people choose to tan as frequently as they do. The fragrances in the tanning lotions also can help attribute to this effect.
The most important thing is that anyone who plans on spending time in the sun be properly prepared to provide their skin with adequate protection. Sun tan lotion, sun block, or sunscreen is a must. Most people need to learn to use it properly to get the maximum benefit.
